Directions:
- Cut a 2-3 inch long stem and remove all of the leaves, except the ones on top.
- Place the cuttings in a small glass bowl, making sure the waterline is below the leaves. Change the water every few days.
- After a few weeks you should see new roots; at this point, you can plant it in soil.

How do you regenerate chives?
Green onion, lettuce, and garlic chives: These are a few food scraps that have the magical capability to regenerate. By placing the ends in a jar of water, you can regrow your own produce at home – no dirt required.
Can you root chives in water?
Submerge the bottom in water. Change the water every few days to prevent pathogens like molds. In just a few days you will begin to see bright green shoots. Let them grow to the height you require, and harvest them by cutting them off.
How do chives multiply?
Chives sprout from bulbs beneath the soil. Over time, the bulb splits and forms new bulbs, eventually creating a larger clump of chives. The plant’s foliage dies back each fall, and the bulbs beneath the soil go dormant. Once warmer weather arrives in spring, the bulbs begin sending up new green spiky foliage.
How do you harvest chives so it keeps growing?
Tip 1: When you harvest chive leaves, remove the entire length of the leaf. Don’t just snip off the tip. Instead, snip off the whole leaf all the way down to the soil line. This encourages a flush of new growth and can be done many times throughout the growing season.
