Can you eat salami without cooking it?
Salami are a family of coarse, dry, boldly seasoned sausages. The intense flavour of salami arises from the long curing process, during which the sausage matures in its skin. This process also means that salami are safe and ready to eat, despite being uncooked.
Does salami need to be cooked?
All salami sold in stores is ready to eat and do not require any cooking. It is either ‘dry cured’ which is dried enough until it is safe to be consumed. Or cooked salami which is ready to eat also, this includes hot smoked salamis which are ready to eat but not preserved.
Is salami technically raw?
Dry-cured salami is technically raw and can be eaten directly. The drying process eliminates the risk of harmful bacteria spreading and causing contamination. Other ingredients such as salt and vinegar also prevent bacteria growth. Hot smoked salamis, on the other hand, are actually cooked.
Can I eat just salami?
Salami can fit into a healthy diet as an occasional indulgence. Unfortunately, it often goes hand-in-hand with foods that also require moderation, like cheese and other high-sodium, high-fat cold cuts. Remember to stay within the serving size and watch what you pair with salami.
