Can Onions And Potatoes Be Stored In The Same Pantry?
Storing potatoes and onions together isn’t the best idea. Onions produce a high level of ethylene gas, which will cause potatoes to ripen — and go bad — before you’re ready to use them.
How do you store potatoes and onions in the pantry?
Use a storage container that is well-ventilated, such as a crate, a cardboard box with holes punched in it, or any container that will allow any excess moisture to evaporate. Keep the container covered to block light and prevent your spuds from spouting.
Where should you keep onions and potatoes?
Keep them in the dark: Potatoes and onions are best stored in the dark in a cool place (separately of course). If you have a basement, this is a great place to store them!
Can I store onions in the pantry?
Place the container in a dry, dark spot, like in the back of your pantry or inside a cabinet. Sunlight can affect temperature and humidity, causing onions to go bad. Properly stored whole onions will stay fresh for 6 to 8 weeks.
