Can Old Rum Make You Sick?
Expired alcohol doesn’t make you sick. If you drink liquor after it’s been open for more than a year, you generally only risk a duller taste.
What happens if you drink old rum?
Rum is one of the distilled spirits. It’s a stable alcohol, and that means it can be stored for years and still stay fine. So no matter if it’s a bottle that’s sitting there for years waiting to be enjoyed, or one opened and waiting to be finished, the rum will likely be perfectly fine.
Does old rum go bad?
An unopened bottle of rum doesn’t go bad. Unopened rum can last for decades upon decades. But once the bottle is opened, rum goes pretty fast. Seaspirits Distillery, master rum distillers, recommend drinking a bottle of rum within 6 months of opening.
How do you know when rum goes bad?
How to tell if rum is bad. This one is quite easy – you will know. If you’ll notice some impurities in the bottle, change of color or radical change of smell, it’s better to discard the liquid. If it looks fine, taste it.
How long can you keep rum once opened?
Volatile compounds by nature evaporate first, so we suggest you to drink the rum within 6 months of its opening. Rum will retain both its content and drinkability (for up to 6 months) if the bottle/container is sealed and relatively evaporation free.
