Can you grow your own einkorn wheat?
Direct sow in weed-free, well-prepared soil September to October, or during a dry spell in early spring. Optimal seeding rate is 20 seeds per square foot, best sown 10 seeds per row foot in rows that are 6″ apart for ease of cultivation and harvest. Einkorn is usually very frost tolerant.
Can I grow einkorn?
Although more research is needed, a good rule of thumb is to plant einkorn and emmer with no more than 50%–75% of the nitrogen required for modern wheat. Winter spelt can be fertilized as winter modern wheat without the additional spring topdressing. The hulled wheats also show tolerance to environmental stresses.
How long does einkorn take to grow?
Einkorn wheat differs from modern wheat hybrids. It thrives in soil that isn’t overly rich in nutrients and doesn’t receive too much rain or irrigation. Grow until maturity, which is around 100-140 days, depending on its growing conditions and climate.
Where is einkorn flour grown?
Einkorn wheat commonly grows wild in the hill country in the northern part of the Fertile Crescent and Anatolia although it has a wider distribution reaching into the Balkans and south to Jordan near the Dead Sea.
